COMPETITION INFORMATION

The Taça da Liga (League Cup), officialy known as the Carlsberg Cup is a Portuguese League Cup competition originally proposed by Sporting Lisbon and Boavista F.C. in 2006 and unanimously approved by all clubs from the Portuguese professional leagues in a meeting in Porto on 28 November 2006. There will be 32 teams, the sixteen from the Portuguese Superliga and the sixteen from the Liga Vitalis. The winner of this cup will get a spot in the UEFA Cup. Since its inception in 2007, the competition is named after its main sponsor, Carlsberg. Carlsberg has signed a deal for the rights to name the competition through to the end of the 2009/2010 season.

Format

In it's current format going forward, the first round will consist of a single elimination round. In the first round, only Liga Vitalis teams will play each other in a home and away contest. In the second round, the eight winning teams will enter into a group stage involving the teams placed 7th to 16th from the last season's Superliga standings. There will be 6 groups of 3, each team playing 2 games, one home and one away. The group winner will advance to a 3rd round involving the top 6 teams from the last season's Superliga standings. There will be 3 groups of 4 teams, each team playing 3 games. The winners of the groups and the best second placed team will meet in the semi-finals, in a single-leg game, with the winners advancing to the final to be played March 22, 2009.

In it's first year, the first three rounds consisted of a single elimination round. In the first round, only Liga Vitalis teams would play each other. In the second round, the eight winning teams would face the eight worst seeded Superliga teams of the previous year (except the two relegated teams) plus the two teams that had earned promotion to the Superliga. By the third round, the remainig clubs plus the eight best seeded Superliga teams of the previous year would face each other in a single elimination round. Following that, a fourth round would take place, also in a single elimination round. After this, the four remaining teams would play each other in a group stage. The top two teams at the end of the group stage would face each other in the final.
