Clube
Desportivo Nacional, founded in 1910, is a Portuguese football
club, that plays in Funchal, Madeira Islands. It is commonly
known as Nacional da Madeira. Nacional shares a rivalry with
fellow Madeira club C.S. Marítimo.
History
The Madeira derby is often associated with the clubs' followers'
differing culture and way of life. The fans of Nacional, being
of a higher socio-economic status than those of Marítimo,
were mainly lobbyists for the commercial expansion of Madeira,
but the working class Marítimo followers were keen to
preserve Madeira. This only exacerbated the ill-feeling between
the clubs. The rivalry heightened when Portuguese starlet Cristiano
Ronaldo declined an offer from Marítimo in favour of
CD Nacional, where his godfather was a member of the board.
Politics
plays a part in the Madeira and Azores derby because Madeira's
controversial regional governor Alberto João Jardim is
a self-confessed C.S. Marítimo supporter. He doesn't
have a good relationship with Carlos César, the regional
governor of the Azores and avowed C.D. Santa Clara fan.
Rivalry
CD Nacional has a big rivalry with CS Marítimo every
time they meet in the Portuguese Liga between themselves.Although
CS Marítimo have dominated CD Nacional before because
CS Marítimo were always battling for Europe every year
but CD Nacional were fighting to stay up in the Portuguese Liga
and CS Marítimo were the wealther club in the last few
seasons CD Nacional have crept up to Europe finishing like 4th
and 5th and battling the likes of Sevilla and Rapid Bucuresti
in the UEFA Cup.They have had very good players to help them
in the Portuguese Liga reaching Europe like Miguelito, Paulo
Assunção, Adriano and Diego Benaglio.
The season 2003/04
In
the Portuguese Liga in 2003/04 season it was argualby the best
ever season for CD Nacional finishing 4th in the Portuguese
Liga just getting past SC Braga and a high points range with
56 points over 34 games winning 17 games and drawing 5 and losing
12 games.In that season they also had good footballers who would
later move on to FC Porto like Paulo Assunção
a defensive midfielder who kept the teams defence strong and
able to attack who scored 2 goals in 50 appearances and also
goal machine Adriano.During Adriano's time at CD Nacional he
scored 42 goals in 89 games and also being behind the winner
of the portuguese golden boot by Benni McCarthy beating him
by one goal with Adriano scoring 19 goals.After the success
in the Portuguese Liga they finished quarter finalists in the
Portuguese Cup and qualified for the UEFA Cup playing spainish
giants Sevilla.
